About the 2484 community
The 2484 postcode area includes Murwillumbah and surrounding villages. The forecasted population for 2021 was approximately 11,000 people. We are a border town in the Tweed Shire, approximately 25 minutes from Queensland. Nestled in the heart of our community is Wollumbin (Mount Warning), which is of significance to locals. Tourism, agriculture (sugarcane, bananas, assorted tropical fruits) and retail are our main industries. The sugar mill at nearby Condong and surrounding canefields, are prominent entry features to our town.
The Murwillumbah region is widely cited as being in the top percentile of disadvantaged communities in New South Wales, a reality borne out in social statistics for the area. Based on the SEIFA Index of relative socio-economic disadvantage, South Murwillumbah rates in the bottom 10% of suburbs state wide for socio-economic disadvantage and Murwillumbah in the bottom 20%, as measured on a range of factors including income, family and housing type, employment and education. This is largely due to under-employment. Our top 2 industries of employment in the Tweed Shire are Health Care and Social Assistance, followed by Retail Trade, all of which are comparatively low paying sectors.
Diversity is a strong hallmark of the 2484 population. Farmers, tree-changers, families that have lived here for 10+ generations, and those in pursuit of alternative lifestyles, are all part of the mix. We have the largest Hare Krishna community in Australia, a large Sikh community and other diverse religions are well-represented. Diversity has always been strong and valued in the 2484. Presently we are undergoing significant demographic changes as property prices soar and we see an influx of people from capital cities. One of the great strengths of our community is a shared willingness to get involved, as evidenced by the 1 in 4 locals who volunteer.
